Doughnuts are deep-fried cakes with a long European history and roots in still earlier Middle Eastern cuisine. They were introduced to America by the Dutch in New Netherlands to America as oliekoecken (oil cakes or fried cakes).
Surprisingly, there is a very interesting story behind Doughnuts or Donuts. I would like to share this interesting fact before I share its’ recipe.
The Original name of donuts is debated. Some people believe that the word donut refers to the nuts that were placed in the middle of the dough to correct the problem of the uncooked centers. Others believe that it refers to dough knots, which was a popular shape for olykoeks.
In 1809, with Washington Irving’s publication of A History of New York, the word “doughnut” appeared in print for the first time. By the early 1900s, the word was shortened to “donut.” Today, either spelling is acceptable.
Ingredients that you need to make Donuts’ is:
- All-purpose Flour 2 cups (250 g)
- Grain Sugar 3 tbsp
- Egg 1
- Butter 3 tbsp (melted)
- Dry Yeast 1 tsp
- Luke warm milk ½ cup
- Luke warm water (if needed at the time of kneading dough)
- Caster Sugar ¼ cup
- Melted Dark Chocolate 400gms
Take a bowl. Sift Flour first.
Add Sugar, Melted Butter, Dry yeast and Egg into a flour. Mix these ingredients. Now add Luke Warm Milk slowly to make a nice dough.
Knead the dough until its soft.
Use Luke warm water if needed.
Sprinkle some flour on the table top and take this dough back. Roll this till it’s got half centimeter roughly thick. Once you make sure, this is nice and evenly thick.
Now there is a home trick. All of us may not have access to cutters. So, take a steel glass and I am sure is there with us almost all the times.
Dab it in a little bit of flour and give it a cut. Similarly, you gonna keep cut in till the entire surface of the dough is utilized. Now the center whole, take a beautiful looking cap of a bottle. I am sure its also there with you. Dab this into a flour, so right in the center of each round, press this.
Lift these very carefully and place this on a tray. While placing these, you just have to make sure to leave a little bit of space or a gap between the two because these are now gonna rise and buff.
Now with the remaining dough, continue with the same process so that not a single piece of dough’s waste.
Rest it for an hour and a half so it’s kind of puffs up. But before leaving it, take some oil and place with a brush, just to make sure that the top is not dry up.
So, after 1 and ½ hour now it’s’ time for frying.
Lift these carefully and place these in moderately hot oil.
Once they get a beautifully light brown color, give this a flip.
Carefully lift these, drain it nicely and place these into an absorbent tissue paper.
While the donuts are still warm. Drain a little bit of powder sugar. Just little. Repeat this step at another side.
Take a double boiler and melt the chocolate. Keep stirring.
Take a donuts, dipping one side of it in a chocolate. Give it a little drizzle.
Take a double boiler again and melt the white chocolate. Keep stirring until smooth. Now with the help of a fork, drizzle white chocolate over the donuts. Let be these as random as possible.
keep it aside for 1 and half hours.
Your donuts are ready to serve!
Happy Cooking. 🙂
